The rugged, mountain terrain of the Hanmer Springs Basin is ideal for mountain biking.
The numerous all weather single tracks in and around the Hanmer Forest range from scenic beginners trails through to technical trails for the experts.
There are also backcountry tracks on gravel roads and the exciting new development of the national cycle way in the St James Conservation Area.

Forest Cruiser (Beginner) - a classic easy loop track through the stunning Heritage Forest. A non-technical track of approximately 4 Kms. Many of the tracks within the Heritage block can be interlinked to provide hours of fun in the forest.
Flax Gulley / Swoop / Majuba (Intermediate) – Link these 3 classic tracks for a great trip around the back of Conical Hill.
Yankee Zephyr and Red Rock (Expert) – Challenging routes on swooping switchbacks and rocky terrain - amazing views if you can look up from the track!

Jacks and Jollies Backcountry Gravel Road Loop 2 - 4 hour bike ride
Jacks and Jollies Loop is a popular 25km mountain bike ride starting in Hanmer Springs Village. The ride circles Mt Isobel, passing through 800m high Jacks Pass and following the Clarence River before entering Jollies Pass and returning to Hanmer Springs Village.
Visitors can hire mountain bikes, helmets and associated equipment from outlets in Hanmer Springs Village. Ask at the Hanmer Springs i-SITE Visitor Centre, or look out for signs advertising bike hire.
For the more competitive bikers, Hanmer Springs Village plays host to a number of mountain biking events throughout the year. The Hanmer Springs Mt Bike Club organise the annual Hammerhead ride. There is the Mt Isobel Challenge, the Krank Duathlon, the 4 & 8 Hour Event, Mt Bike Orienteering, the Rainbow Rage and the Molesworth Muster. The Hanmer Springs Mountain bike Club first started in August 2004.The club consists of a small number of volunteers who help build and maintain the mountain bike tracks in the Hanmer forest. If you would like to become a part of this club, or for further information, check out the Hanmer Springs Mountain Bike Club website.

• Beware of forestry vehicles using the roads, and obey all forestry management signs.
• Always wear a helmet.
• Remember Hanmer Springs is an alpine environment and the weather may change suddenly. Carry appropriate clothing and equipment.

"Hanmer has some of the best trail riding and XC style tracks in NZ. They are a little raw, with a track or tracks to suit all riding skills. Ask for track information at the I-Site, Backtrax bookings office or KRANK adventures."
